Coco Gauff will likely have a chance to secure a spot in the next round of the WTA Finals by beating Marketa Vondrousova, so will she?
There is a very good chance that Coco Gauff wins this match and secures her place in the next round of the WTA Finals. She's arguably the better player between these two and certainly looked far more comfortable in the opening round match of either.
Gauff smashed Ons Jabeur easily in two sets, while Vondrousova couldn't do much against Iga Swiatek. Even if it looks very simple at first glance, there is some nuance to it. Obviously, the way the court plays suits Gauff far better.
Her versatility as a player allows her to play both attacking and defensive tennis equally well. That, with the bouncy conditions, gives her an edge in pretty much any matchup. Even so, she can be beaten, as Iga Swiatek demonstrated, but Vondrousova never did it so far.
Head-to-head:
They played two matches so far. The first one happened a while ago, in 2021, and Gauff won it, albeit in three sets. The second one happened this year and fairly recently at the Montreal event. Gauff won that one, too, and it was a dominant scoreline, 6-3, 6-0.
So, the second one clearly shows the trouble for Vondrousova. Stylistically, it's not a very good matchup for her, as Gauff can counter her style of play very easily. That leaves very little way for the Czech player to win the match, so what is it?
Prediction:
One thing that could help her is the serve of Gauff. It's not her strongest weapon and can be funky at times. If the American doesn't have a very good day serving, then Vondrousova can exert pressure. She'll have to avoid errors as much as possible, and that's one way to beat her.
I don't see it happening, especially after observing both of them play in Cancun, but there is always a chance.
Prediction: Coco Gauff to win in two sets.
