Bianca Andreescu vs Camila Giorgi: 2023 Canadian Open Montreal - Preview & Prediction

by Kadir Macar

Bianca Andreescu will get her Canadian Open campaign underway with a match against Camila Giorgi, who won this event when it was in Montreal the last time.

Yes, Camila Giorgi won her biggest trophy at this WTA 1000 event when she surprised many with her run to the final in 2021. She faced Karolina Pliskova in the final and produced another solid effort beating her 6-3, 7-5 to win the event.

It's highly unlikely that she'll do it again as her form has been all over the place, and also because she's going to play a native player, that will certainly make it very tough for her. Bianca Andreescu has high hopes for this event with a firm belief that she can win the tournament.

It's unlikely to happen, but beating Giorgi should seem possible, even if she's not playing the best she can right now.

Head-to-head

Their head-to-head consists of only one match played and it happened a long time ago. Back in 2017, Andreescu defeated Giorgi in their only match but this upcoming one could certainly go similarly. It went to three sets with the Canadian getting it done in the end.

Prediction

As stated above, this match could go a very similar route. Giorgi plays a very aggressive style of tennis. There is very little surprise there, she's going to hit the ball hard and live with the result. Andreescu on the other hand has a bit more variety in her game and certainly the needed competitive spirit to stay in most rallies.

Being on native soil should boost her as she lives for these kinds of matches, and facing a former champion of this event, who hasn't been playing that well recently, certainly will add to that. Andreescu, on the other hand, seems very motivated.

Prediction: Bianca Andreescu wins in two sets.
