Andy Murray and Stefanos Tsitsipas were battling it out on the Centre Court at Wimbledon on Thursday, but the match won't be finished on the same day.
Although the lighting is not a problem, and neither is the rain thanks to a close roof, the second-round match between Andy Murray and Stefanos Tsitsipas won't be finished on the same day, even though it was turning into a real epic.
Tsitsipas, who had to fight in five sets in the first round of the tournament, started the match better after he was able to take the first set in a tie-break. The Greek had the only break point of the set, and even though he couldn't use it, he dominated in the tie-break, winning it 7-3.
But Murray, who turned into a comeback master in 2023, wasn't ready to give up and he showed it in the break point-less second set. That was once again decided in a tie-break and this time, the Brit won it comfortably 7-2.
Supported by the home crowd, the two-time Wimbledon champion used the momentum in his favour, winning eight of the first nine points in the second set and breaking his opponent's serve. The Brit the faced two break points in the fourth game, but saved both.
Thanks to that, he was able to serve out the match, even surviving a scary-looking injury scare on his second set point when leading 5-4, and 40-15. Murray got up and thanks to his powerful serve, forced Tsitsipas to send the ball wide, winning the third set 6-4 and taking the lead of the match.
However, as he approached his chair, supervisor Gerry Armstrong was already consulting him, saying that the match will have to be suspended. That is because of the Wimbledon curfew which has been in place since 2009.
It was the condition when the roof was built over the Centre Court at Wimbledon, as the authorities wanted to 'balance the consideration of the local residents with the scale of an international tennis event that takes place in a residential area.'
The match will continue on Friday with the scoreboard showing 6-7(3), 7-6(2), and 6-4 for Murray, and it will be the second match on the Centre Court, which is already packed with matches between Carlos Alcaraz and Alexandre Muller, Iga Swiatek and Petra Martic, and Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka.
