During the 2022 Wimbledon Championships final ceremony, Nick Kyrgios broke the strict dress code and wore a red hat as he was handed a trophy.
Already before the tournament, Kyrgios was asked about the all-white Wimbledon dress code and provided an answer that seemed to go unnoticed. During the tournament, another Australian player, Daria Saville, also spoke about the all-white dress code and how female players struggle with it.
As the 27-year-old Australian progressed through the tournament, he tried to fight the tradition and suggest to the officials that they might reconsider the rules.
When asked about the all-white dress code before the tournament, the Australian player said that he likes to wear all-black clothing. He also suggested that such clothing could look "cool" at Wimbledon.
At the same time, Kyrgios is aware of the strict rules at the All England Club. Already before the tournament, he said that "Wimbledon doesn't care what looks cool," and he also suggested that the tournament's rules might never change.
Already during the tournament, Kyrgios sported red sha oes and a red hat during one of his matches, and he was asked about it after the match when he answered that he didn't feel like he was above the rules. He just likes his Jordans.
"Because I do what I want. I’m not above the rules. Well, I just like wearing my Jordans. I’ll wear some Triple Whites tomorrow. But nobody else, even after Wimbledon, no-one else really walks with Jordans on the court."
After the final, Kyrgios put on the red hat once again and he wasn't asked about it after the event anymore. The tournament organizers have yet to give any statement if the Australian would be punished or if his attempts to change the strict dress code were successful.
At the end of the day, it's clear that Kyrgios doesn't only want to protest Wimbledon's strict dress code but also shed light on the issues that some players might face because of it.
