Andy Murray is proving once again that he's a very solid grass-court player, as he's already set to play quarter-finals at the 2022 Newport Open.
The 2022 Newport Open is the only grass-court tournament held after the third Grand Slam of the season and after losing already in the second round at Wimbledon, Murray signed up for the event for the first time in 16 years.
But so far he's been showing why he lifted the Wimbledon trophy twice. He first defeated Sam Querrey 6-2, 6-0, and then Max Purcell, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.
The experienced Brit should play against Alexander Bublik in the quarter-finals of the ATP 250 tournament in Newport, but it's not clear if he will be fit for the match.
After fighting against Purcell for two hours and 23 minutes, the former ATP World No. 1 player limped off the court, and it seems that he might not be 100% fit once again.
There will be no easy matches for Murray in Newport anymore as he will play the third-seeded Bublik and then potentially the No. 1 seed, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and No. 2 seed, John Isner.
Now, Murray will have one day off, so he will have enough time to assess if he's ready to compete. After the match, he didn't speak about his physical issues. Instead, he explained why it took him some time to get used to his opponent's game.
"He has a very different game style to a lot of the players on Tour nowadays. He was using a lot of slice off of both sides, which is very rare. It took some time to get used to that way of playing."
"Then once I started to find my rhythm a little bit in the middle of the second set I was able to dictate points and push him around the court a little bit more, whereas in the first set I certainly wasn't doing that."
