'What If He Hurts Himself?': Federer's Former Coach Cautions Crazy Alcaraz Predictions

| by Sebastian Dahlman

Many have made bombastic predictions about Carlos Alcaraz and his future, though Roger Federer's former coach Severin Luthi cautions against that.

The Swiss coach has worked with Federer for many years and knows him very well. He's followed the Swiss Ace against some of the best tennis players for many years, which makes him a rather solid candidate for talking about tennis.

He's seen it all, from wins to losses to dramatic comebacks and injury heartbreaks. Due to his vast experience, Luthi is very cautious about making huge predictions about the future of Alcaraz. Like many, he's amazed by his level seeing as someone who can win a lot on the ATP Tour in the future, but there are many factors outside of tennis itself that determine that.

He definitely has what it takes to win many Grand Slam tournaments. And yet we don't know what will happen in two years' time. What if he hurts himself?

What if there's another one coming out in a few years that we all say is even more incredible? And: How someone will react to the great success is something we can't estimate that early on. In sport we always live in the moment. I've learned that in my career.

Continuing his interview with Blick, Luthi admitted that he was wrong in most of his predictions about tennis which is basically an indirect way of putting a disclaimer on his words. Ultimately nobody knows what will land can happen.

He himself thought nobody would catch Sampras and now three players did and Alcaraz could too. Some already think he will.

Aside from that, I guess I've been wrong about most of the predictions I've made in my life. I still remember: When Pete Sampras had won 14 Grand Slam titles, I said: No one will ever achieve that again! Now we already have three players who have 20 or more Grand Slam wins. And it's not like 250 years have passed since I made my statement.
