Despite his country competing only in the World Group 1 Play-Offs, Stefanos Tsitsipas signed up for the Davis Cup and helped his country with the first victory.

Greece didn't have a lot of success at the Davis Cup in recent years, but that should change for the country as Stefanos Tsitsipas will do everything possible to make his country fight for the trophy in the coming years. This time, he helped in the tie against Ecuador, which is held at the Olympic Athletic Center of Athens "Spiros Louis" in Greece.

In his first match, and also the first match of the tie, the world no. 3 took on Alvaro Guillen Meza, who is ranked as world no. 731 on the ATP Tour. Tsitsipas was a massive favourite in this match, and he controlled the match from start to finish.

The Greek started with a break already in the first game, but his opponent would soon show his qualities and break the 2023 Australian Open finalist back. For a brief moment it seemed that a tie-break will have to decide the first set, but that was only until the 11th game.

The Ecuadorian gave his experienced opponent two chances to break, and despite saving the first break point, he didn't handle the pressure on the second one and made a double fault. Tsitsipas then controlled his serve and ended the first set with an ace, winning it 7-5.

The second set was much more dominant from the Greek. He got an early break again, but this time, he added one more and never lost his advantage. After an hour and 28 minutes, Tsitsipas won the match 7-5, 6-2 and he will now hope that his teammate Aristotelis Thanos will follow up with a victory against Andres Andrade.
