Sinner Admits He Would Like Berrettini's Name On Davis Cup Trophy Due To His Support

| by Evita Mueller

Matteo Berrettini didn't play for Italy at the 2023 Davis Cup Finals, but he was there and supported the team, which is why Jannik Sinner wants his name on the trophy as well.

Matteo Berrettini barely missed any chances to play for Italy in the Davis Cup so far in his career, but he's been quite unlucky. Every time the Davis Cup rolls around, Berrettini is either injured or just can't play the way he wants to, and it doesn't work out.

This year, it finally worked out for the country as they won the competition, but largely thanks to Jannik Sinner. His double heroics against Novak Djokovic in the semi-final were the crucial results that allowed Italy to move on to the final.

In the final, Sinner once again delivered for his country to win the Davis Cup. Berrettini didn't play, but he was physically present, cheering them on, and it's why Sinner wants to see his name among those who contributed.

According to Sinner, he contributed to the win, which makes sense because he was quite engaged from the sidelines.

Seeing the players on the bench when you're playing, asking Berrettini or others their point of view as players is nice. Winning a Davis Cup like this is special. I want to say that seeing Matteo there was very nice. He's not inside with his name on the cup, but if it could be done in some way we all would like him to be there.

While the gesture and intent are nice, according to the rules, Bererttini's name can't be on there, but don't worry, neither of them is going anywhere, and perhaps they'll team up to win a few more for Italy in the coming years.

Berrettini's place in Italian tennis legacy will be cemented either way, with or without the Davis Cup.
