Casper Ruud caught some criticism for winning only ATP 250 tournaments, but he dismissed that following his 2023 Estoril Open win.
Being arrogant is not something that you can really attribute to Ruud but he won't sit back and just take criticism over nothing. The Norwegian admitted recently that his scheduling this year was not a very smart idea.
Yet he also dismissed general criticism surrounding him as a player that got an easy path to being where he is. Playing the ATP 250s is not something many top players do but Ruud has no problem with it. They are still events with a trophy and points as he proved in Estoril again.
People don't write much about me. I think that's also because I don't have the most flashy game and most beautiful winners, forehand, backhand, serve. But in the end I'm winning quite a lot of matches. The ranking is 52-weeks, last year I won many matches.
The triumph in Estoril pushed him to number four on the rankings and while it's not a career-high ranking for him it still shows how far he got by being very consistent. His best-ever ranking was number two and he referenced that after the win.
I got to number two. People will always find a way to criticise no matter what. They will say the path was easy or that I'm playing some smaller tournaments. Maybe you can give credit to my smart scheduling.
He also got very open about some self-doubt that arose with the bad results earlier this year. He's human and naturally, he'll doubt himself too but he found a way to disregard all of that and simply be comfortable with who he is as a player. The win in Estoril will certainly calm some of those doubts down.
99% of what you read online is writen by people that have no clue about tennis. It can be dangerous to spend too much time online. You can start to doubt yourself. I'm happy with who I am. I don't always need to have the cameras around. Other players can do that stuff
