We were set for a spectacle at the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters as Holger Rune and Matteo Berrettini were set to clash.
With both known for their powerful game, their third-round meeting promised to be one of the highlights of the third round of the first clay-court ATP 1000 event of the season. But once again, the Italian struggles with an injury that kept him out of play.
After beating Maxime Cressy and Francisco Cerundolo, Berrettini finally found his A-game again, but a grade 2 tear in his internal oblique muscle stopped him from playing another match at the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters. He announced the withdrawal on social media, stating:
"I don’t know where to start….I was finally finding my level and getting back to where I wanted to be….this is a difficult one. I’m very sad to announce I will not be able to play my match today in Monte Carlo. I felt some pain in my obliques during my match yesterday."
"The pain became significantly worse overnight. After consulting with my medical team we decided to have an MRI scan this morning. I have a grade 2 tear in my internal oblique muscle. I can’t thank you all enough for the support. It means so much and is what gets me through these difficult times"
Berrettini will now hope to recover in time for the upcoming series of ATP 1000 tournaments in Madrid and Rome, and even if he misses those, he'll surely want to be ready for the only clay-court Grand Slam, the Roland Garros in Paris.
On the other hand, Rune will focus on his quarterfinal match as the young Dane will meet the winner of another third-round blockbuster between Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev.
