Medvedev Marks 'Every Match On Clay A Struggle'

Daniil Medvedev battled Lorenzo Sonego, the crowd, and the clay at the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters, but he emerged victorious from the match.

It was a decent outing for Medvedev who is full of confidence after a really good week on the ATP Tour. He didn't keep his winning streak but he's looking very confident in his tennis and even playing on clay could not deter him. It did still annoy him though.

Every match is a struggle [on clay], but I have had some good matches on clay. I managed to play good against a very strong player on clay. Lorenzo is very strong. Here in Monte-Carlo there are a lot of Italians in the crowd, but a lot of French also, so it was fun to play, and I am happy to beat such a tough opponent.

The wins he got in Indian Wells and Miami certainly kept his spirits high after an incredible run in the Middle East. Playing on clay is totally different than on hard courts but the Russian still has the same confidence he had on hard courts.

It’s completely different on clay, but confidence is confidence. It’s about winning matches, because it is always two players that play, and one is going to win… I hope to bring this confidence even further.

The win over Sonego earned him a chance to play Zverev once more. Their matchups are generally very fun but the German will have an advantage with the match being played on clay. He even joked about beating him in juniors on clay but predicted a different story this time around.

We’ve had some tough matches. We played for the first time maybe seven years ago on the ATP Tour, and in juniors maybe 12 years ago. I remember I beat him once in a final on clay in juniors, but it’s going to be a different story.
