Holger Rune struggled greatly with his tennis recently, and he talked about that leading up to his return at the 2023 China Open in Beijing.
It's been a poor second half of the summer for Holger Rune, who hasn't won a match since Wimbledon. He played plenty, and therein may possibly lay the problem. The schedule wasn't easy to navigate with the Hopman Cup immediately after Wimbledon, and he also struggled with a back injury.
It followed him at the US Open as well, and the end result was just a 7-match losing streak that included a loss in the recent Davis Cup as well. Rune pulled out of the Laver Cup to give himself more time and look healthy leading up to Beijing.
Yeah, I was struggling with back injury for a while now. I got it fixed. I played a lot of tournaments with a lot of pain in my back. But then I was like at the end, Okay, I got to stop and fix it, not come back to playing tournaments until I'm hundred percent. That's also why I'm here. I'm ready to go and I'm excited for what's to come.
Rune is a player who loves to compete and play tennis, so don't expect me to really shy away from playing many events. He's young, and he wants to play though he did admit that he might have signed up for too much.
I think honestly my schedule was right. Yeah, maybe a few tournaments too much where I should have maybe rested. Also to be maybe more ready for the biggest tournaments. But that's the past. Now I have to look at now and forward.
Even so, Rune managed to progress really nicely in recent days and is excited to make a return to the courts while being fully healthy.
And I think it's been a good progress so far. I'm trying to progress as fast as possible, every day a little bit more and more and more. That's my focus. Like 1% better every day, that's what I'm seeking for. I'm enjoying the journey.
