Jannik Sinner doesn't see Carlos Alcaraz as his rival, saying there's a rivalry between the young Spaniard and Novak Djokovic.
Sinner and Djokovic have made a habit of playing at Wimbledon in recent years, and they have generally been really good matches. Djokovic won those, which isn't surprising, but the young Italian doesn't want to include himself in debates about rivalry, not yet.
The more obvious rivalry right now is with Carlos Alcaraz, whom Sinner played and beat a few times already. But when talking about rivalries, the Italian said that the main one is between the young Spaniard and the experienced Serbian.
No, look, at the moment it's tough to talk about this rivalry because I feel he has won so many things at the moment. I think at the moment he's still a better player, no? He has shown this. He was No. 1 in the world already couple of times. I think at the moment the biggest rivalry is him and Novak.
Rivalries are an essential thing in sports because Djokovic talked many times about how the rivalries he had with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal helped him become an even greater player. Sinner knows this but he's mostly focused on himself and trying to improve which is the most important thing to be fair.
At the moment I'm very focused about myself because I have to improve also physically because I feel like I have a lot of potential physically. That's also the reason why I played much more less tournaments this year than last year, because I have to prepare the body to win the big tournaments.
Rivalries are a natural thing in tennis, and they will happen regardless of whether players focus on them or not. That's the view Sinner generally has.
It's going to be a question what will be answered in the future, no? I would be happy to be the rivalry of Carlos, for sure. I feel like that I have the potential to do it. But let's see. It's all about the future. We can't say what's happening (smiling).
