Holger Rune hired a new coach recently, and he's enjoyed the experience of being able to tap into his best tennis.
Holger Rune had a shockingly bad run over the summer, losing multiple matches in a row. At one point, the Dane was 1-10 in his last 11 matches, which obviously wasn't good for a Top 5 player on the ATP Tour.
Despite having a tremendous start to the season, Rune is actually fighting for a spot at the 2023 ATP Finals in Turin, which seems mad compared to just months ago. Back in June, Rune looked like a safe bet in Turin, but that bad run in recent weeks puts him in a tricky spot right now.
Changes needed to be made, obviously, so he made them. He hired Boris Becker as his new coach and saw his level improve in the first event under him.
The impressions so far are pretty good. He praised Becker ahead of the Paris Masters, where he hopes to have a similar run to last year (he won the trophy).
It's been great working so far with Boris, what we're working on is what you see on the court. There were a few adjustments that we made to be able to come back on track a little bit more. And I think that I was willing to do those small changes. I played some better tennis [in Basel] and I was fighting very well. Obviously didn't find my best level still, but I'm definitely building up more.
Rune felt for a while that he couldn't find his best tennis, and it looked like that on the court. He seemed very indecisive, almost scared about playing the type of aggressive tennis he's known for. Confidence was shot, but it's starting to return under Becker.
[I think] the more peace and quietness there is around a tennis player or an athlete, the better they can perform and if it's less, the more tough it is to keep the focus. It was definitely tough for me to be the best version of myself and that's not good for any athlete.
