The men's part of the
Canadian Open will return to
Toronto in 2025, and as always, the
entry list is packed with exciting players.
The Canadian Open is one of the most unique tournaments on the Tour. Both the
ATP Masters 1000 and the WTA 1000 tournaments are held in Canada every year, with the events rotating between Toronto and Montreal. The men's and women's tournaments are always held in different cities, returning to the same city every two years.
That means that, in a way, there will be two defending champions for the 2025 Canadian Open, which will be held from July 27th until August 7th.
Alexei Popyrin, who
won the tournament last year in Montreal, will be the defending champion as the last player to win the Canadian Open.
However,
Jannik Sinner, who won the tournament in 2023, when it was last held in Toronto, is technically also the defending champion, as the last player to win the title on the courts in Toronto. Both will obviously compete in 2025 as well.
Of course, these two players are not the only former champions of the event.
Novak Djokovic,
Daniil Medvedev, and
Alexander Zverev have all won the tournament before, and they will attempt to add another title to their collection.
But there are also some players who have never lifted a trophy in Canada and will be among the favorites this year. Obviously,
Carlos Alcaraz is one of them. The Spaniard has never performed well in Canada.
He lost in his first match in 2022 to
Tommy Paul. In 2023, Alcaraz won two matches but lost in the quarter-finals, once again to the same opponent. Last year,
he didn't compete at the event.
The list of players who could record a similarly surprising win like Popyrin did last year is very long. For example,
Jack Draper is already an ATP Masters 1000 champion, and he will be in the group of the broader favorites to win the title in Toronto. The likes of
Holger Rune,
Ben Shelton, and
Frances Tiafoe will certainly be dangerous as well.
Tennis fans in Canada will obviously be interested in seeing their own players.
Felix Auger-Aliassime and
Denis Shapovalov will traditionally compete at the event. Young talent Gabriel Diallo will join them in the main draw this year.
There are also five wild cards that the tournament organizers can distribute to players. It's expected that some of those might go to Canadian players, but it wouldn't be surprising if some of the legends of the game, who don't have sufficient ranking to enter the main draw, received one as well.
Out of previously injured players, only one chose to use his protected ranking to enter the tournament.
Jenson Brooksby will play in Canada. That also means that crowd favorite Nick Kyrgios won't compete at the event, unless he receives a wild card.
