The first
WTA 1000 tournament after the 2025 Wimbledon Championships will be held at the 2025
Canadian Open in
Montreal, which is scheduled for July 27th to August 7th.
This year's Canadian Open is the first to last over a week, despite the ATP and WTA players not competing at the same location. The men will play in Toronto, with the venue alternating each year.
Jessica Pegula is the two-time defending champion.
She played a terrific final set to overcome her compatriot
Amanda Anisimova in the final after an entertaining battle that gave the fans in Toronto value for money.
Unsurprisingly, Pegula will return to defend her title. There were some doubts about whether she would participate last year because of her appearance at the Olympics, but the 31-year-old's decision to play again quickly after representing Team USA proved wise.
Pegula endured
a disappointing setback against Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the opening round of this year's Wimbledon. She hopes to recapture the form that led to her title in Canada and making the finals at the 2024 Cincinnati Open and 2024 US Open afterward.
Aryna Sabalenka defeated Pegula in Cincinnati and New York. Although the Belarusian won their US Open final 7-5, 7-5 without needing a deciding set, the contest was of exceptional quality from start to finish. Pegula lost despite playing excellently.
Sabalenka has dominated on hard courts, winning three Grand Slams and reaching the last five major finals on the surface. However, she has yet to win the Canadian Open title and will look to change that this year.
Coco Gauff is another high-profile name on the
entry list. Unlike Pegula,
the Roland Garros champion found adjusting back to North American hard courts challenging after playing in the Olympics on Clay in Paris.
Despite reaching three quarterfinals, Gauff has never been past that stage of the tournament. Like Pegula, she wants a strong response after
being disappointed by her opening-round loss at Wimbledon.
Iga Swiatek's last title was her 2024 French Open triumph. She came close to breaking that drought at the 2025 Bad Homburg Open, but lost to Pegula in the final.
That result left her in tears afterward.
Although the former WTA world No. 1 won the 2022 US Open, the titles at the two WTA 1000 tournaments that occur before have eluded her. Swiatek can have another crack at changing that in a few weeks when she competes in Montreal.
18-year-old Mirra Andrreva has already won two WTA 1000 crowns at the 2025 Dubai Championships and the Indian Wells Open this season. The teenage prodigy will try to add another in Montreal.
Elena Rybakina hopes to have won a second Wimbledon title by the time the Canadian Open begins. Although 2025 has included some tough spells, the Kazakhstani won the 2025 Internationaux de Strasbourg title and is among the favorites at Wimbledon because of her formidable grass-court game.
Emma Raducanu,
Naomi Osaka,
Madison Keys,
Qinwen Zheng,
Paula Badosa,
Jasmine Paolini, and last year's runner-up Anisimova are among the other players on the 2025 Canadian Open entry list.
