Emma Raducanu fought bravely against Aryna Sabalenka at the 2025
Wimbledon Championships, but ultimately, her efforts were not rewarded with a victorious feeling.
Raducanu played a great match against the reigning
WTA World No. 1 player. She led in both sets, coming close to winning them, but ultimately, she just couldn't outplay
Sabalenka, who won the match 7-6(6), 6-4.
Despite the loss,
Raducanu gave the British crowd plenty of reasons to celebrate, as the atmosphere at the Centre Court was truly electric. The two played two hours of great tennis, and to the 2021 US Open champion that proved that she could compete with the best.
Still, her disappointment was very palpable after the loss. Sometimes, it's even more devastating to lose after playing well than to lose after playing badly and having no chance. Raducanu certainly had reasons to feel like she could have won that match.
Coping with tough losses is something that every athlete approaches differently, but for Raducanu, there was one obvious choice after losing to Sabalenka. With a few weeks without a competitive match ahead of the Brit, she chose to eat a popular wafer bar, Kit Kat.
"First thing I did, I had a Kit Kat in the changing room. I’ll probably find it tough to sleep tonight, or I’ll be so exhausted and crash. It’s gonna take me a few days to process. At the same time, it really motivates me, and it could be a good thing that I’m like, 'Ok, I wanna get straight back to work,' pretty much."
"Because it’s not far, but there are still a lot of things I want to do better. A lot of things I want to improve to really solidify my game, so in the big moments I can back myself a bit more. But I think in due course I’ll watch it back."
At the same time, Raducanu really tried to focus on the positives during her press conference in London. Challenging Sabalenka proved to her that she can play against the best, something she will try to remember in the upcoming weeks.
"It does give me confidence because I think the problem before was that I felt like I was gulfs away from the very top. Having a match like that where I had chances in both sets, it does give me confidence."
"At the same time, it’s very difficult to take right now. It gives me confidence that I’m not as far away as I perhaps thought before the tournament. I think previously, when I was playing those Top-5 players, it was pretty convincing, the loss."
"To really push Aryna to the top, it gives me confidence. But at the same time, like, I feel like grass for me is a great surface. It’s a bit of a leveller in that sense. So I think taking it onto a different surface, where it’s a lot more lively in America is another challenge in itself."
