Andy Murray's defeat to Alex de Minaur at the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters was hard to watch according to former player Laura Robson who is at the event.
Working for Eurosport, Robson followed the match along with another former player Justine Henin and they spoke about the match after its conclusion. It wasn't a very good match for Murray as he struggled to move on the court which resulted in him hitting a lot of shots out of sync. Most of them ended up as errors either wide or in the net.
He was super disappointed with how he played. It is so hard to watch because you know how much work he is putting in outside of the court and in the gym, just to be able to play out on the clay because it is so difficult for him physically.
It was quite a disappointing loss for Murray and in a quite reactionary fashion, the Brit admitted that he might skip the entire clay season after this poor performance. Robson noticed his body language during and after the match which demonstrated very well how hard the loss affected him.
"He said it was one of the worst losses of his career, he said that he felt awful out there and he was almost apologising to the crowd at times because he felt he was playing so badly," she added.
The former player thinks Murray has it in him to bounce back. Up next is the Madrid Open, an event where he theoretically should do better. If he builds up confidence there he might do well in Rome as well as Paris. That is if he elects to play at those events which is not a certainy right now.
I think often it is just about how you bounce back from that, and there is no one better at that on the tour than Andy. It is going to be a very interesting couple of weeks for Andy Murray.
