Novak Djokovic won two Roland Garros trophies in his career and he has a dream of making it three this year after last year's disappointment.
Winning Roland Garros during the era of Rafael Nadal is truly one of the hardest things you can do in tennis. Djokovic did it twice but he also lost a few finals along the way. The goal for this year is quite clear. He wants to hit a good level before Paris in order to put himself in a position to win his 3rd trophy at Roland Garros.
I have to say, it’s in the back of my mind, as an ultimate goal on clay. I really want to be able to build my form so I can peak in Paris.
He just played his first match on clay this year and it was a solid outing albeit far from perfect. Clay has always been a surface he needs to adapt to in order to play well and that generally takes a few weeks which is why Rome is the place where he did best among these clay Masters.
It’s still a long way. The clay-court season is quite long, you have pretty much every week some strong events and tournaments. Hopefully, I can start the clay season here in a positive way. I’m mainly focused on what I can deliver here and then of course moving into different weeks. But of course, Roland-Garros is an ultimate goal.
He even called his first win on clay an 'ugly win' because he didn't really play that well but he won which is the most important thing. Now it's about building up with each match and hitting that peak form in time for Roland Garros.
It was probably, if you can call it this way, an ugly tennis win for me today. I haven't played my best, particularly in the first set. And I kind of expected that that was going to happen in a way with swirly conditions, a lot of wind today, changing directions.
