Former player Mark Petchey believes that Andrey Rublev's time will come and he will be a grand slam champion one day.
Rublev looked like a supreme talent a few years ago collecting trophies semi-regularly. His career didn't follow that trajectory recently as some younger players have come out and overtaken him when it comes to both ranking and results.
It seems as if his career kind of stalled out a bit in the past year but former player Mark Petchey is not worried about it. He clearly sees grand-slam-winning talent in the Russian and believes that with time, he will get it done.
A guy like Rublev has got to think that that quarterfinal spot which he has been stuck on a number of times already in the course of his career since 2017 US Open, that he is going to get further than that. And if he gets further than that, then anything is possible, I do think his time will come.
For Petchey, it's just part of a time passing in the sport allowing the younger players to step up and go deep in grand slams. With players like Alcaraz, we've already seen them winning grand slams and Petchey believes that we'll see more of that now. Certainly more than we saw it in the past 15-20 years where the pool of possible winners was maybe 4-5 players big.
I think there probably should be a little bit more chatter because we are going to have more opportunities right now. I mean, we obviously know the Big Four, some have departed, some are still there, some are still struggling to some degree. So, there's no question that you are going to see at the backend of Majors, more opportunities that we have ever seen the last 15 or 20 years.
