Taylor Fritz didn't produce a very good effort against Novak Djokovic at the US Open, and he explained what went wrong after the match.
Fritz has been really solid for the entirety of this US Open, that is, until he met Novak Djokovic. He started well, carving out a break point early, but things went downhill afterwards. It was a pretty quick turnaround, and while he consolidated a bit later in the match, it wasn't enough.
Djokovic secured the straight sets win to advance to the semi-final, frustrating Fritz. Speaking after the match, the American blamed his bad serving as the cause of the defeat. He's right because serving well was crucial for him, and he needed it to win.
It wasn't there at all. I thought I served awful. It sucks. Like, it's something that, like, everything feels good, and the serve is not going in. Something I have to just get back and work on, because it's not something that I'm used to. My serve has always been, like, pretty, like, automatic for me and confident in it.
The serve is a crucial weapon for many players as it's an essential part of modern tennis. All the young players have strong serves because it's the only shot you completely control. Everything else is not only dependent on yourself.
There are some positives for Fritz, though. His serve has been somewhat lacklustre this year, but he's returning much better than before so that's a positive. He's still in contention for the 2023 ATP Finals in Turin and that's the goal for this year.
I guess the good news is that I'm returning serve much better. You know, I'm still having an overall good year, even though I'm probably serving the worst I have served, just because the other parts of my game are much better.
