Andy Murray looked healthy in his 1st round match at the US Open, cruising past Corentin Moutet in straight sets.
The British player took preparations for this part of the season seriously, which paid off. He was pretty solid both in Washington and Toronto but, unfortunately, injured himself in Canada. He had a minor tear in the abdomen, ultimately resulting in him withdrawing ahead of his match against Sinner in Toronto.
He also skipped over Cincinnati, which he confirmed was the right call in the pre-event press conference a few days ago. Today, he proved pretty healthy by cruising past a tricky opponent. Moutet is not a player you want to see finding his rhythm because he can beat the best.
Murray did a really solid job at not allowing that to happen, as he opted for a very aggressive approach, putting Moutet under a lot of pressure. The French player didn't handle it that well, especially on return, where he struggled all match long.
It was only in the second set that Murray lost his serve, but he found solutions on the serve of Moutet consistently so it never became a big problem. The opening set went 6-3 to Murray as he dominated from the baseline. The second set saw Murray miss a bit more than usual which made it more competitive but he still pulled through.
The final set was another solid one, though Murray kind of wasted early break chances, which was not ideal. He generally wants to avoid playing long matches, so taking his chances is paramount. He did use his next batch of break chances to go up 5-3 and finish off the match.
The final score was 6-2, 7-5, 6-3 for Murray who moves on to face either Alex Molcan or Grigor Dimitrov in the next round.
