Andy Murray was supposed to play Jannik Sinner for a spot in the Canadian Open third round, but he withdrew minutes before his match due to an abdominal injury.

The British player was having a really solid event after putting together a good run at the Citi Open last week as well. Wins over players like Sonego certainly proved him as far more than an afterthought at these events and probably cemented him as a factor at the US Open as well.

Unfortunately, that's all in doubt now, as the British player has an abdominal injury; severe enough to prevent him from playing. Minutes before the players were supposed to play their match, Murray stepped onto the court to address the crowd announcing his withdrawal.

It seems that US Open shouldn't be in danger, but it's tough to say whether that's just wishful thinking on Murray's part because the last time he had an abdominal injury was last year during Wimbledon, and while he did play, he was severely restricted.

"The issue is my abdominal. So, unfortunately, I am not going to be able to play this evening. I’m really sorry. I know, I feel like I’ve let you down. Yeah. I’ve rarely been in this situation in my career. And I feel terrible."

Time will tell best, but it's an unfortunate development for Murray just as he was starting to pick up some serious form. Murray stayed to sign some autographs and take pictures with fans in order to try and make up for his withdrawal which was a nice gesture.

Jannik Sinner gets a walkover into the quarter-finals where he'll face Gael Monfils, who bested Aleksandar Vukic earlier today. It's going to be a proper spectacle between two players with contrasting styles and a pretty big age gap.

As for Murray, he'll likely make his way to New York in order to get a head start on preparations there, unless he plays in Cincinnati.
