Holger Rune didn't do much this week in Toronto, but others proved kind enough to allow him some major personal milestones.
Rune has pretty high hopes of this North American stretch, hoping to play some signature energetic tennis and get some good wins. After all, there is only one Grand Slam left, and it was a goal of his to win one of those this year.
While that might have been too ambitious for now, Rune has been one of the best players this year sitting at number 7 in the ATP Race. In the ATP Rankings, Rune was number six before this event but he'll be better after this event.
He's set to enter the Top 5 for the first time in his career after the 2023 Canadian Open achieving a major personal milestone. By doing that Rune actually became the 4th youngest active player to make his way to the Top 5. As you can imagine, Rafael Nadal is the youngest having done it at 18 years.
Nadal is also the 6th youngest all-time to make his Top 5 debut. Carlos Alcaraz is the second youngest active player doing it at just over 19 years. Novak Djokovic is the 3rd youngest active player, having done it at 19 as well, and now Holger Rune slots in at number 4.
He did it at 20 years and 3 months, one month before Alexander Zverev did it a few years ago. The German is now the 5th youngest active player to make a Top 5 debut. Pretty strong stuff from Rune who has high hopes for the future such as becoming world number one.
His former coach Patrick Mouratoglou sees no reason why he couldn't be number one but there is a lot of work to do. He'll certainly have to be a bit better than losing to players like Giron.
