Emma Raducanu won't compete at next week's Berlin Open, withdrawing from the tournament shortly before the draw was made.
Raducanu last competed at the Queen's Club Championships. She easily won her first two matches at the WTA 500 event, beating Cristina Bucsa and Rebecca Sramkova. In the quarter-finals, Qinwen Zheng beat the home crowd favorite.
After her loss, Raducanu admitted that she had struggled with a back injury for a few weeks, and that it impacted her during the loss to Zheng as well. She admitted that the injury might force her to miss the Berlin Open, which she planned to play.
The Brit didn't have a lot of time to make up her mind, and she decided to skip the Berlin Open, withdrawing shortly before the draw was made. Before making the decision, the 2021 US Open champion admitted that she was motivated by the WTA 500 level of the tournament, but by not playing in Berlin, she will also miss out on a chance to earn some valuable ranking points.
Raducanu is currently ranked 36th in the world, and she will probably narrowly miss out on a seeding spot at Wimbledon. Being seeded means avoiding the rest of the seeded players in the first two rounds, something the British player would have certainly benefited from.
In fact, she spoke about being seeded after her loss in London, admitting that it's something that could help her. At the same time, she focuses her efforts on improving her game, not her ranking.
"I think being seeded obviously helps in Masters, helps in slams, and a lot of tournaments, so you're not playing one of the top players early rounds. But my goals have slightly shifted from being seeded to actually improving my game."
"And when I play those top players, making it closer and feeling more competitive rather than just feeling, okay, I maybe get to the third round of a slam but then lose comfortably to one of the top. I think I'd rather have a more competitive match, even if that means losing first round, second round, and I think that, to be honest, is how I feel right now."
There are two options Raducanu has now after withdrawing from the Berlin Open. She can stay in London and start preparing for Wimbledon on the practice courts, or still play one more tournament in Eastbourne.
The Eastbourne Open is a WTA 250 tournament that will be held from June 23rd until June 28th, the week prior to the Wimbledon Championships. If Raducanu wants some competitive action before heading to SW19, she could compete in Eastbourne.
If she chooses not to, the 22-year-old, like the rest of the Tour, will then set her sights on the Wimbledon trophy. The singles main draws start on June 30th.
