Emma Raducanu admitted that she wasn't 100% healthy during her loss to Qinwen Zheng at the 2025
Queen's Club Championships.
Women's tennis returned to the Queen's Club, and luckily for the home fans, there were plenty of British players in the draw of the
WTA 500 tournament. The last British woman standing in the draw was Emma Raducanu, but she lost her quarter-final match to the top-seeded Qinwen Zheng. The Chinese player won the match easily in two sets, 6-2, 6-4.
For Raducanu, playing at the Queen's Club was certainly a good experience, as she managed to win two matches in singles and one in doubles alongside Katie Boulter. However, that much tennis showed its mark on the Brit's body.
After losing to Zheng, Raducanu admitted that she has struggled with an issue for a few weeks now, dating back to her match against Danielle Collins at the Strasbourg Open. Since then, the 2021 US Open champion has
struggled with her back, and that has also impacted her at the French Open and now in London.
Speaking after her loss at the Queen's Club, Raducanu admitted that she was impacted by her back injury, which is a worrying sign ahead of the Wimbledon Championships.
"I have been struggling with my back since Strasbourg, and it's just been something that's been on and off. I have been managing it pretty well over the last few weeks, but I guess as the week goes on and I have played five matches now, like, even if two were doubles, I think it just tests it out."
"And I just felt it, I think, as the load goes up. They took me off the court and taped it to give me some extra stability and some painkillers. That was it."
Raducanu was asked whether this injury worries her with Wimbledon right around the corner. Despite admitting it has impacted her, the Brit didn't seem to be too concerned.
"Well, I don't know. Like it's been lingering for the last few weeks, and I have had, like, back issues before. I think it's just a vulnerability of mine. I know I need to take good care of it."
"I'm not overly concerned that it's something serious, but I know it's something that's very annoying and needs proper and careful management."
The next tournament that Raducanu has on her schedule is the Berlin Open. As a Brit, she was asked why she chose a tournament in Germany over many tournaments available in the Great Britain. She explained that the WTA 500 level of the Berlin Open played a role in her decision making.
"I got the opportunity to play a 500-level tournament and it's extremely strong. I think the cut initially was something like 20. For me, I wanted to have exposure to the best and see how I fare up, see the ball that's kind of coming my way so that if it were to happen in a Grand Slam, I would have some sort of rough idea."
"I'd say that was the reason. And I played Nottingham last year. I have great memories, but this year, I wanted to try something else."
Whether Raducanu will appear in Berlin is still up in the air as the Brit is currently not sure about her participation. The tournament starts on June 16th, and Raducanu would need to travel to the German capital shortly after her loss in London.
"I don't know. I need to think about that and see how it settles and recovers over the next few hours."
