Daniil Medvedev had a pretty good tumble during his 2023 US Open final match against Novak Djokovic, and he talked about it after the match.
Medvedev is very tall, so his tumbling down isn't the same as some of his shorter colleagues on the ATP Tour, and when he remained on the court, many wondered whether he injured himself. Djokovic walked up to Medvedev and tried to help him up, but the Russian declined, remaining on the court for a little while.
He got up and continued playing, but he took a medical timeout for an apparent shoulder injury in between sets previously, leaving some wondering whether the fall may have worsened it. It didn't, as he addressed the tumble after the loss to Djokovic, explaining that he just wanted to see whether something would start hurting.
Yeah, I felt nothing. Actually, when the moment I fell, I was, like, Man, this could have been not dangerous but I could have hurt myself. So for maybe 30 seconds, one minute, I was, like, does it hurt, does it not hurt.- Medvedev on the fall
When it comes to the issue Medvedev had, he didn't really specify what the problem was, but he did explain that it was 'growing and growing', so it was only going to bother him more the longer the match kept going on. He didn't blame the loss on the issue, though.
There was other problem I had. In the third set it was growing, growing, growing, and at the same time, again, that's how tennis is. Maybe I win the second set and I don't think about the other problem I had. The pain goes less. When you lose it, the pain goes up. Again, I definitely didn't lose because I had a small pain on my left shoulder.- Medvedev on the shoulder issue
