'Lot Of Parts I Didn't Enjoy': Raonic On His Comeback After 2 Years

by Sebastian Dahlman

Milos Raonic made a surprising comeback to the ATP Tour on grass a few weeks ago, and while he looked solid, it doesn't mean he's going to continue playing for a long time.

Raonic was away from the sport for a while because his body couldn't really handle playing consistent tennis anymore. It doesn't look like that time off did much in that regard, as his tennis looked good, but his body is unlikely to hold up in the future.

After producing some solid wins and playing once more at Wimbledon, Raonic is back in Canada, where he will play at the Canadian Open, which begins on August 7th. He spoke about his comeback to Open Court, admitting that he didn't enjoy everything in his comeback journey.

Most of my injuries have been to the lower body, so I knew I needed (to do) something to give myself the best chance. I only ate one steak a day for about 4-5 weeks. I wouldn't recommend it to anybody. I don't think it was a smart thing to do. There were a lot of parts to it that I didn't enjoy. ... but I was willing to do it.

The method he employed was ill-advised but wanted to give himself a chance to play, so he was willing to endure it. It had adverse effects, such as muscle loss, but he played tennis again, so technically it worked.

I lost a lot of muscle during that, for sure, but I knew I could always build muscle if needed that go the other way. This was all the way in January, so I knew I had the time to get things ready. It wasn't advised to me by anybody, and it is not meant to be advised, but it's what got me there. I sucked it up and tried to make the most of it.
