Cristian Garin and Camilo Ugo Carabelli had one of the most heated confrontations of the 2025 season after their match at the 2025 Bastad Open.
Both men like playing on clay more than any surface, and probably targeted the post-Wimbledon clay-court tournament as a way of picking up vital ranking points before the ATP Tour becomes hard-court only until the end of 2025, when the 2025 Canadian Open begins on July 27th.
Garin missed his opportunity to have a good run in Sweden. The Chilean lost 4-6, 4-6 to Carabelli, who was more solid throughout the contest, and broke serve five times to seal a good victory.
However, most will remember the match for what happened afterward. The video below shows Garin becoming angry after something Carabelli said to him when they shook hands, but the pair's exchange is not in English.
Translated, Garin accused Carabelli of calling him stupid during their exchange. He then launched a furious tirade at the Argentine and claimed not to know what he had done to deserve Carabelli's hostility.
"What's wrong with you, dude, why are you calling me stupid? Tell me what I did to you, idiot, what did I do to you, asshole?"
In no mood to de-escalate the situation, Carabelli told Garin that he was a fool and wished him a nice flight back home to Chile before telling the former Wimbledon quarterfinalist that no one loves him.
Unsurprisingly, those words only infuriated Garin further. The 29-year-old said he would be waiting for Carabelli outside and looked forward to discovering whether his victorious opponent had the balls to meet him there.
There were no reports of Carabelli meeting Garin afterward. It would have been unwise for him to do so after beating the Chilean, and letting the threat against him go unanswered was undoubtedly the correct decision.
It is uncertain what caused the heated moment at the end of the match. The incident shows how challenging it can be for fans to keep up with everything that is happening and what tensions exist on the court.
However, sometimes the animosity between players is more obvious. Aryna Sabalenka's annoyance with Amanda Anisimova in their 2025 Wimbledon semifinal for not apologizing after one of her shots clipped the net and screaming before a rally ended angered the WTA world No. 1.
Sabalenka spoke about that openly after losing to Anisimova in three sets. Although the Belarusian was gracious at the net afterward, she was probably among the least sympathetic players after Anisimova lost the final 0-6, 0-6 to Iga Swiatek.
That is not the only fiery moment Anisimova was involved in this season. At the 2025 Miami Open, Mirra Andreeva accused the American of deliberately stopping play for tactical reasons during a game to receive treatment.
After Anisimova beat Andreeva, she posted an Instagram story showing how bad the blister was. The duo has not played since, but there could be an extra edge when they face each other again after the unexpected tension in Miami.
