Jannik Sinner vs Marcos Giron: 2023 Shanghai Masters - Preview & Prediction

| by Evita Mueller

A red-hot Jannik Sinner will put his winning streak in danger against Marcos Giron at the 2023 Shanghai Masters just days after winning the trophy in Beijing.

Sinner has had a really crazy week in Beijing, which concluded with a stellar performance against Daniil Medvedev in the final. He played an amazing match to win the trophy and will now look to extend that winning streak against a very tricky opponent in Shanghai.

Marcos Giron has played some pretty solid tennis lately and won his opening-round match, but this is a totally different challenge. Sinner is a far better player and is playing far better right now, but fatigue could be very well in play here.

Head-to-head:

Despite both being part of the ATP Tour for a while now, Sinner and Giron haven't played each other so far. That's a bit surprising but it's not a huge problem because we know how they approach tennis and what might happen in a match between them.

They don't have many similarities as they approach tennis very differently, but both are good at what they do.

Prediction:

Giron is a very polished player. There isn't something he does extraordinarily well, but he doesn't have glaring weaknesses either. He doesn't have the power that some modern tennis players have, but he uses precision to his advantage, especially with the serve and forehand.

He can do well in conditions like these, but he's also quite vulnerable against a player like Sinner. Mostly because the Italian brings a lot of hitting and aggressiveness, which is very hard to counter. You need some power for that, and Giron simply doesn't have it.

So generally, this is a matchup that Sinner wins easily in 9 out of 10 matches. The only reason to doubt him here is the fatigue factor, which will be in play. Giron is capable of using that to his advantage. I still think Sinner wins this.

Prediction: Jannik Sinner in three sets.
