Danish star Holger Rune indirectly showed his displeasure to the US Open tournament organizers after he was allocated a show court for his opening match.
For the third year in a row, Rune will play at the final Grand Salm of the year, but he enters this year's edition at a career-high ranking of World No. 4. Rune is in the bottom half of the draw, and therefore, will play his opening match on Monday where he is scheduled on Court 5, against Spain's Roberto Carballes Baena.
Rune was clearly not happy and shocked his fans when he posted on X, advising them to check out the tournament's Grounds Map to be able to locate his court with a satellite picture of the stadium complex within Flushing Meadows. The outside show court, Court 5, has a seating capacity of about 1,100.
While Court 5 has a fully immersive experience of actually living every moment as a spectator due to its close proximity to the players, it doesn't always hold any fondness among players and journalists and Rune certainly felt he deserved better.
"US Open site map. In case you can find court 5, this is where I play my first match Monday followed by 11:00."
It's no secret that being a higher-ranked player often means that you get to receive special perks like being allocated one of the main courts during a Grand Slam or better practice courts than lesser-ranked opponents. But despite coming in as the world's fourth-ranked player, Rune appears bamboozled by the decision to put him on Court 5.
Fans and journalists have shared their opinions on the matter, and the majority of them feel Rune deserved better. Respected Portuguese journalist Jose Morgado tweeted, saying, 'Court 5 is great, but putting your 4th seed in the 5th most important court is.. a choice.'
