Anett Kontaveit overcame rain delays and rescheduling to win her first match at Wimbledon postponing her retirement by at least another match.
Many tennis fans wondered when Anett Kontaveit would finally return to tennis and when she announced her comeback to the WTA Tour weeks ago, very few expected it to be short-lived. The Estonian came out with a shocking announcement that Wimbledon would be her final event.
As disclosed in the announcement, Konaveit suffers from degenerative disc disease which ultimately will prevent her from playing tennis. Wimbledon will be her final event and she started off well overcoming a couple of rain delays to take care of business on the court.
Super pleased that I managed to win this. I mean, it was very difficult. Difficult for both of us. I mean, for all the players, waiting for two days is not easy. But there is nothing we can do about rain (smiling). Yeah, I'm very happy with the way I managed to fight through it, and very pleased with the win.
There has been a lot of controversy surrounding the court on which Kontaveit played. Initially, Kontaveit was scheduled to play on a court which has no seats but fans can stand and watch the match. Plenty of fans questioned Wimbledon's choice but when the match got postponed to the following day, some held hope that it would be moved to a bigger court.
It didn't happen as Kontaveit was once again placed on the same court resulting in more backlash for the event. Fans flocked to the court in big numbers but ultimately it didn't end up being her final match. Asked about it Kontaveit candidly admitted that she hopes for a bigger court next time but it's not something she can control.
I do hope to get a bigger court next time. I was not expecting to play on Centre Court or a huge court anyway. Yeah, it's their decision and nothing I can do about it. Yeah, just deal with whatever comes my way and try to do the best I can.
I don't feel disappointed right now. I just won my match. So no negative emotions from me at the moment.
In her opening match, Kontaveit comfortably defeated qualifier Lucrezia Stefanini from Italy 6-4, 6-4 and in the second round of the tournament, she will play against the 32nd-seeded Marie Bouzkova from the Czech Republic.
