Former coach of Novak Djokovic, Marian Vajda revealed he's still in contact with the player who considers him part of the family.
Vajda and Djokovic worked together for many years as the Slovakian coach is one of the most fundamental persons in Djokovic's tennis journey. He was watching over him when he made his breakthrough and saw him achieve some great things.
They parted ways once but reunited again a few years after that only to part ways again. Eventually, Djokovic opted for Ivanisevic instead of Vajda. It didn't change much for the Serbian as he continued being great but the split was a difficult one according to the Slovakian coach.
I enjoyed the imperial way in which he conquered the title, on the most difficult surface for him and on the most difficult Grand Slam for him.- Vajda on Djokovic winning #23
Vajda and Djokovic faced each other competitively since the split as the Slovakian teamed up with compatriot Alex Molcan whom Djokovic beat at last year's Roland Garros. The Serbian didn't look forward to the match and Vajda found himself plotting against Djokovic for the first time as opposed to for him. It wasn't a pleasant experience for him and it's due to the closeness between the two.
They're practically family and Djokovic still considers him a very important person in his life. They exchanged messages after Djokovic Roland Garros' triumph with the coach sharing the meaningful message he got from his former protege.
Right after the game, I sent him a voice message. I told him that I was very happy because he had achieved it, because he already had the 23rd title. Several hours later, he answered me and told me that he appreciates it from the heart, that he does not forget that I am still part of his team and his family. They were precious and moving words.
