'Don't Get Me Wrong': Federer Reveals Who He Supports 'Deep Inside' At Laver Cup

by Sebastian Dahlman

Roger Federer is in Vancouver for the 2023 Laver Cup, and while he loves the event and both teams, his heart still beats Blue.

Blue is the colour for Team Europe instead of red, designated for Team World. Federer obviously played for Team Europe until his retirement at the event last year, so it's no wonder that he hopes that Team Europe wins the event.

Last year was the first Laver Cup which Team World won so there is certainly an added motive for the team to do well. Speaking ahead of the event, Federer shared his excitement about being in Vancouver and hoping that Team Europe wins.

I’m very happy and pumped up to be here. It’s going to be short and sweet, three full days, action-packed. I get very excited about Laver Cup doubles, because there are usually teams that we haven’t seen in the past so I would like to maybe see Hurkacz and Rublev play together.

I’m happy if World wins, don’t get me wrong — but somehow, I can feel it deep inside, I want Europe to win.

On who he hopes wins

Federer came up with the event and will always be tied for it. He's not playing anymore, but expect him to be there every year, if nothing else, then as ambassador. Regarding the tennis side of the event, Federer might even become a Team Captain down the line, even though there are no plans for it as of now. It's still John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg.

I like being in the tennis sphere. Maybe one day, I’ll be the Captain of the team. There’s no plans as of now, but I think that could be quite nice.

We'll see whether that comes to fruition but for now, it's time for the 2023 edition which begins in two days.
