Novak Djokovic might not be 100% coming into the 2024 Australian Open, but John McEnroe isn't writing him off because of that.
Novak Djokovic has done some tremendous things in his career, but one of the most impressive could be what he did last year at the Australian Open. He won the trophy, of course, but apparently, he did so with a huge tear, which would have left most tennis players unable to play, let alone win the event.
It's known that Djokovic dealt with some injury, and his play early on in the event kind of confirms that, but the claim that Australian Open director Craig Tiley made after the event only proved it, and it's not impossible to imagine that Djokovic can do some things other players are not.
After all, we've seen him do that for over a decade. If Nadal could win Roland Garros with a numb foot, Djokovic could have won the Australian Open with a 3 cm tear. The question ahead of this year's event is: Can he do it with a wrist issue? John McEnroe told ESPN that he can.
We don’t know whether Novak is 100 percent. Obviously, he’s been injured allegedly the last couple of years and won the event handily so...let’s just say he knows how to manage it so we’ll see. Obviously, he’s won it 10 times. Who would’ve thought that would’ve happened?
A lot of things happened in Djokovic's career that many thought couldn't or wouldn't be possible. He's dealt with wrist injuries in the past and overcame them, but this came at a pretty bad time.
It bothered him at the United Cup, so what's the chance that it won't bother him again? He will play matches with a higher intensity and in a longer format. We'll just have to wait and see, as the season's first Grand Slam is set to begin on January 14th, 2024.
