Djokovic Set To Miss Serbia's First Davis Cup Tie On Tuesday

Novak Djokovic's commitment to play for Serbia has never been questioned, and it shouldn't be, as he'll play for the country just days after winning the US Open.

We've seen in the example of Carlos Alcaraz last year how playing so soon is not the smartest idea, but the Serbian promised to play for Serbia months ago, and he intends to keep that promise at the 2023 Davis Cup Finals.

He'll be part of the country's push towards the knockout stages of the Davis Cup Finals, as the country is in a very tricky group and they need him. They'll be in Valencia with Spain, the Czech Republic and Korea.

It's not the most challenging group imaginable, but it's a tough one, and having Djokovic there certainly boosts the country's chances, especially with the absence of his main rival Carlos Alcaraz.

Even so, he won't play in the country's first tie against Korea in order to give himself a bit more time to recover. The roster should be good enough to win that, even without Djokovic. He will play against Spain and the Czech Republic, as those matchups are crucial ones, and will be played later.

The first of his matches will come some five days after winning the US Open, which is a really short turnaround, but Djokovic is expected to find the perfect balance and help his country win. He confirmed his participation during an interview with ESPN following the US Open win.

"Right now, I just want to enjoy the success for a few days because I'm playing for Serbia in Davis Cup. I'm not going to play on Tuesday, but I'll play on Friday and Saturday."

We'll see how that goes and whether it impacts Djokovic's schedule regarding the events in Asia. There is a chance he might skip that trip altogether, but we don't know, as he generally did really well over there and enjoys tremendous popularity.
