Djokovic Calls For ATP To Address Criticism Surrounding Balls Causing Injuries And Scheduling

by Sebastian Dahlman

Much has been talked about the tennis balls situation, and Novak Djokovic added his thoughts at the 2023 Davis Cup Finals after having some discussions with the decision-makers.

Very few things have been as controversial in tennis as the tennis balls situation. Scheduling and tennis balls are basically the burning questions in the sport right now, and both need to be fixed.

The balls seem like a more pressing issue because it has a real impact on the players. More and more players have been struggling with injuries that might be related to the tennis balls.

It's a quite prevalent narrative among the players themselves, so there might be some truth to it. It further adds to the concerns which are not just about health.

Players are struggling to find any kind of consistency when they have to play with four different tennis balls in four consecutive weeks. It's just an issue that needs to be addressed.

There has been a lot of discussions on the effect of the different balls and basically every week on the joints and the wrist and the shoulders and the elbows. You know, I think someone told me that in terms of injuries this year comparing to other years, you know, drastically has gone up.

So yeah, in terms of the balls, I absolutely agree there should be some discussion on that. I actually spoke about that with Andrea Gaudenzi, the ATP president, and Massimo, who is the CEO, in Paris during the Paris-Bercy week. I shared my opinion and my views.

Djokovic was assured that the ATP is looking into it, but that's not saying much. They might look into it with nothing coming of it. We'll have to wait and see, but the players have made their stance well-known. Now, we'll see whether they were heard.
