Daniil Medvedev vs Nicolas Jarry: 2024 Miami Open - Preview & Prediction

by Zachary Wimer

Daniil Medvedev won the Miami Open last year, but he's looking at a very tricky matchup against a very good player in his next round this year.

Medvedev enjoyed last year's change in court speed when the courts were made much faster. The change came under new tournament director James Blake, who wanted to make the matches a bit more exciting.

The Russian went all the way to winning the trophy, so he clearly didn't mind the change. He does not mind it this year either, as he's cruising through the draw and looking very comfortable.

Can Nicolas Jarry be the answer to that? He certainly won't go down easily. He has pretty good skills et, which could give Medvedev some trouble in their match.

Head-to-head:

They had only played once so far, and it was years ago in Barcelona, with Medvedev winning that match in two sets. Jarry is playing far better right now compared to then, as he's basically been on a Top 20 level for a while.

What's even better for him is the way the courts in Miami play. He has a powerful serve and likes to play attacking tennis, so he can certainly make this match an interesting affair.

Medvedev knows how to counter that, but if an opponent does it well enough, they can certainly beat him. A lot will depend on his approach as well, as he can't afford any weak moments against the Chilean.

Prediction:

I think Medvedev will handle this match, but I don't think it will be smooth. Jarry is good enough to keep the match close, and he can certainly win a set, but I think, eventually, Medvedev will wear his opponent down. He just likes it in Miami with these new conditions, and he showed it last year.

Prediction: Daniil Medvedev to win in three sets.
