'Can't Embarrass Myself': Djokovic Shares Immediate Reaction After Getting Ryder Cup Invitation

| by Sebastian Dahlman

Novak Djokovic is in Rome these days, taking part in the Ryder Cup, even though he wasn't that confident in his golf skills.

Novak Djokovic knows how to swing a racquet, but he's far less capable with a golf club. Even so, the Serbian accepted an invitation to take part in the Ryder Cup this year, which he felt was a huge honour. The Serbian is familiar with golf and plays it occasionally, but he's not as confident in his skills as Casper Ruud or Rafael Nadal might be.

Speaking to the Golf channel at the event, Djokovic explained his reaction to getting invited to the Ryder Cup. He also revealed that he prepared a little bit using a few free days to practice not to embarrass himself in front of so many people.

"When I got the invite, I was like, 'Oh my god. I gotta accept this’ I got a bit prepared. I thought ‘I can’t embarrass myself, can’t hit someone in the head. We don't want that. I have no insurance."

Djokovic did fairly well and even had a really good shot, which impressed fans. He's not as good as with a tennis racquet, but he held his own really well. Regarding his tennis, the Serbian is currently on a break after his tremendous run in the US Open.

He withdrew from the Asian leg and will return later this year in Paris. He plans to play the final three events of the year - the Paris Masters, the ATP Finals, and the Davis Cup. It's a pretty significant stretch for Djokovic, who hopes to secure a year-end No. 1 and hopefully win the ATP Finals and the Davis Cup Finals.

Until then, Djokovic might make a few public appearances like the one at the Ryder Cup.
