Ben Shelton secured a Top 100 debut last year with a run at the end of the year and halfway through 2023, Shelton is a far better player.
It didn't take too long for Ben Shelton to prove himself among the best as the American rocked Melbourne with his immense power. It was proof that the youngster is here to stay and he's been proving that even on clay where his tennis doesn't fit the best.
It's been a process for him though he's playing the game with a lot of passion, very similar to the way Carlos Alcaraz approaches it. It's something Shelton carries from his father who was a college coach until recently when he quit his job to join his son and coach him in the professionals on the ATP Tour.
They're both in London for Wimbledon as the youngster is preparing for his first grass championships. It's a big deal for him as his game could work really well on the surface. They talked with Wimbledon as Bryan Shelton talked about the growth he noticed in his son as he matured away from home in Europe.
"My wife, Lisa and I, we talk about it when we were talking to him on the phone, as he's been over here in Europe for, you know, a couple months through the clay court season, just. How mature he sounds. And just the differences that we see and just as growth as a person."
Besides just being a very good tennis player, Shelton has proved himself to be a very good person, something his father deems even more important than his budding tennis career. He'll get to see first-hand what it looks like when his son takes the court and amazes many with his tremendous skills.
"Obviously his game's going to continue to improve. And I think what's most important as a dad and with my wife is to see our kids, you know, grow up and become great people. And so we're just really proud of the man that he is more than the player."
