Alexander Zverev is still undefeated in China in 2023, but he'll put that winning streak up for the test against old nemesis Daniil Medvedev.
They played several great matches over the years, and no love is lost between them. Some of those matches happened this year, with Zverev winning the most recent one at the Cincinnati Masters. The German is on a tear right now, still undefeated since touching down in China.
He won the Chengdu trophy and looks like a good candidate to book yet another final, this time at the 2023 China Open. To get there, he'll have to overcome Daniil Medvedev, who has been fair so far but ranted a bit about the balls, which makes it hard for him to keep the points short.
It's an exciting matchup, especially with these unique courts in Beijing, but let's see who might actually win this one.
The two have played 17 matches so far on the ATP Toru, and Medvedev is leading 10-7. Four of those 17 were played this year. Medvedev won the first one in Indian Wells. Medvedev also won the second one in Monte Carlo. The 3rd one in Rome was also won by the Russian with Zverev winning the most recent one.
As you can see, the more the season went on, the closer Zverev was to winning, which makes sense as it took him a long time to find his best level. This right now is the best he's played all year.
Now what does that mean for the matchup? Well, it's going to be close because I don't see either pulling away easily, mostly due to the conditions.
Zverev has the serve and might be playing a little bit better but Medvedev is a tough matchup for him. I could definitely see both winning but I'll back Zverev.
Prediction: Alexander Zverev to win in 3 sets.
