Alexander Zverev is not having a particularly strong year outside a few solid performances; he's equalled a negative record from 2021.
Zverev has been a pretty solid player for much of his career but this season hasn't been the best. Sure, there are circumstances that contributed to that. He was playing some of the best tennis he ever played last year when he injured himself badly against Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros.
The injury saw him miss the rest of the ATP season as he struggled to get back to playing tennis, and when he returned, things didn't look great either. It was a long time before he finally started looking like himself, let alone the best version of himself, as he's yet to discover the latter.
He was in Bastad this week taking part in the Bastad Open, and he made it to the quarter-finals. He faced his good friend Andrey Rublev and lost to him rather easily, which equalled a negative record for his career. He's now 0-8 against Top 10 players this year, as many losses as he had back in 2021.
That's the worst mark of his career and if he losses once more he'll set a new negative record. It's highly likely because we're only at the halfway mark of the season and he will likely play a few more matches against Top 10 opposition this year.
That's the hope, at least, as any deep run will likely mean he faces one of those players. Zverev usually produced wins against Top 10 opposition every year though he's yet to do that this year. If he doesn't, then it will be another negative stat as it would be the first year since 2015 that he didn't beat a Top 10 ranked player. Things aren't going that much better off the court either for him.
