Alcaraz Admits To Difficulties In Adjusting His Game To Indoor Conditions

by Sebastian Dahlman

Carlos Alcaraz commented on the fast courts at the 2023 ATP Finals after his loss to Alexander Zverev, and he spoke about it a bit more after the win over Andrey Rublev.

The first match Alcaraz played at the ATP Finals was a match against Alexander Zverev, and he really struggled with the conditions. Zverev's serve being a monster didn't really help as he couldn't find a solution at all.

He lost that match and lamented about the courts after that. He wasn't sure why the courts played so much faster than any other court during the entire season, but it looked a lot better in the second match against Rublev, which he won.

After that match, Alcaraz admitted that he struggles with Turin's conditions because they are so different from everything he experienced all year.

Well, outdoors is slower. The courts that we've been playing this year were so, so slow. So coming into the indoor courts, everything is faster. Especially this court, it's much faster than those ones. For me it's a little bit difficult to adjust my game, my movement into the matches.

Still, as he proved against Rublev, it's possible to improve quickly. He looked much better in that one and won it comfortably proving that he had already kind of adjusted. He spoke about that, too, in his post-match press conference.

But everything can change with good practice and good preparation. For me, I found little bit difficult to change my game.

We'll see how he looks against Daniil Medvedev, which might be the toughest matchup he will face at the ATP Finals unless he plays against Novak Djokovic.

With two matches in hand, he should do really well, but we'll see. Medvedev gave him plenty of problems on a faster court like the US Open, so it might be even worse here.
