Carlos Alcaraz had the biggest slump of his career recently, but he's out of it after finally winning a match again.
You might think that his slump was this extraordinary run where he didn't win in a long time, but it was actually only three matches. It was the first time since his breakout that he lost three consecutive matches, which tells you how good he's been since his debut on the ATP Tour.
The most recent loss against Alexander Zverev at the 2023 ATP Finals was particularly painful because he played really well but couldn't find a solution for the serve of the German. His second match at the event featured a battle with Andrey Rublev, who played in the semi-final last year.
He played even better than last time and actually won the match easily in two sets. That ended the negative streak, which is good, but it didn't really bother Alcaraz anyway. He was asked about it after the win over Andrey Rublev, and he said that he didn't really think about it.
Honestly, I don't remember. I saw it was in 2021, but I don't remember the matches right now (smiling). It was a long time ago that, well, I lost three match in a row. The three loses in a row, well, I didn't think about it.
That's a pretty good mindset to have if you're Alcaraz, but that wasn't such a huge deal anyway because it sounds way worse than it is. He did lose three matches in a row, and it was a slump by his own standards, but that's not that many matches at all.
He was actually playing pretty well against Zverev, so it was only a matter of time. He's now back in the winning column and will try to make it two in a row against Daniil Medvedev. He needs a win to advance to the semi-finals.
