'I Don't Understand': Alcaraz Baffled By Extremely Fast Courts At ATP Finals

by Sebastian Dahlman

Carlos Alcaraz was very surprised by the quickness of the courts at the 2023 ATP Finals in the match against Alexander Zverev, who was bombarding away from the baseline.

The German largely won this match because of his serve, as it worked really well from start to finish. Quite a few times, the German was able to wiggle out of a tricky situation thanks to his serve.

He saved multiple break points in the first set. He also had three great serves in the final game of the match to finish off the match at a time when Alcaraz was pushing hard to extend it.

After the match, the Spaniard talked about the quickness of the court, being confused as to why it was as quick as it was, especially since no other court during the year was remotely close.

Yeah, I mean, this surface is the fastest on the year, that's for sure. I don't know why they put this kind of surface at the end of the year because all the tournaments that we have played on hard court is so, so slow, then we come here to the Masters and they put this court so, fast. I don't know why.

I'm not going to say they should do the tournament outdoor or indoor. I don't understand about the speed of the surface because we never played in a surface like this in the year.

Alcaraz wouldn't blame the surface for the loss against Zverev, but he certainly was surprised by it. The speed of the surface is not a huge issue for Alcaraz generally, but it certainly benefitted Zverev on Monday.

Alcaraz failed to really find a solution for his serve, and he never found a good rhythm either. He should be better in the next match as he'll have more time on the court.
