Caroline Wozniacki is days away from her competitive return to tennis, and Kim Clijsters is backing her to do well.
Like Wozniacki, Clijsters had a comeback to tennis after years of retirement as well though in her case it was a longer absence. She eventually returned but didn't do much on the WTA Tour opting for a permanent retirement after playing only one Grand Slam in 2020 and losing in the first round.
Wozniacki is hoping things go differently for her though the ramp-up was rather quick. She is going to make her comeback fairly quickly after announcing her return which is something that shocked Clijsters as well. She found out at the same time as everybody else and couldn't believe the timetable of Wozniacki's plans.
I heard she’s starting in Montreal and then Cincinnati and I was like, no way. It brought it back in a moment. I’m really excited to see her back. I played at the French Open with her, in the Legends, and it was pretty obvious that she was definitely at a different level than most of us. So now that’s super exciting and a great story. I can’t wait to watch her and cheer her on.
As she saw Wozniacki on a tennis court, Clijsters knows what to expect. She was impressed with the level she had and expects the Danish former number one to do really well. The goal of the comeback is to win which Clijsters thinks is possible.
She’s a winner and she wants to win. When she gets out there, she’s not just going there because she wants to be back on tour because then she might as well keep playing the Legends. She’s definitely going there to (win). She’s in great shape. She’s a counterpuncher. She has such great legs, she can defend so well and make it tough for the harder hitters who maybe aren’t that’s consistent all the time.
The draw has her taking on reigning Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova if both win their opening rounds, and that could be a spectacle.
