This year's Italian Open won't be remembered fondly by many and things didn't go any better for the Elena Rybakina - Anhelina Kalinina final.
This year's Italian Open can be in ways described as a disaster, with some of that due to the weather which didn't cooperate, and generally some very odd choices. Besides the scheduling which wasn't great and generally isn't across the board, the event faced scrutiny for things like ticket prices as well.
The increased ticket prices proved a hit on attendance with most matches being played in front of half-empty stands most of the time. The women's final was similar in that regard though having it start at 23:00 local time certainly didn't help.
It was a short match with only one set played due to Kalinina retiring with an injury and frustrations boiled over for the crowd during the trophy ceremony. It was a botched ceremony in itself, very chaotic with no structure, something the event seemed to have lacked since the start.
Former player Rennae Stubbs went as far as calling it the worst trophy presentation she's ever seen in her life on Twitter. The crowd was booing the organizers which was bad in itself, the order of announcement was wrong, it just wasn't well organized.
What the hell is going on with this presentation? Also the fact that the women are playing a final of a 1000 at midnight is an abomination!!!!! Then they announced the winner first!?? And forgot about the runner up! Dear lord!!! Wooof !!! I love Italy i mean LOVE but they are NOT the worlds most organized!
The previous event in Madrid featured a big scandal where players weren't allowed to speak during the trophy ceremony and we had an overcorrection in Rome as the umpire was given a chance to speak due to her being Italian from the region which was recently affected by floods. Stubbs didn't like that either as umpires never speak during the ceremony.
I mean to have the umpire speaking!?????????? What the hell is happening???? No need to let her speak. Sorry. It’s terrible and I get it but it’s not appropriate at that time. The organizers can send their best wishes and say she’s from the region! Crazy! Absolutely crazy!
Officially the worst trophy presentation i have ever seen, In my life!!!! Honesty i need to take a Xanax after these last three weeks!!! What the hell is happening!???
