Elina Svitolina had an incredible run at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships, but it ended with a loss in the semi-final.
Svitolina arrived in London very motivated after a solid run at the French Open. She hoped for a deep run at Wimbledon, but even she probably didn't expect to match her best-ever result at the event by making her way to the semi-final.
To get there, Svitolina took down the number one player right now Iga Swiatek along with some other solid players. Unfortunately, it wasn't meant to be as she lost in the semi-final to Marketa Vondrousova; the second time she lost a big match to the Czech player.
Yeah, was quite disappointed about the match, the performance today. So, yeah, just good tournament of course, but disappointed today.
Her run at Wimbledon was closely followed by everyone back home in Ukraine and it's been a tremendous boost for her throughout the event. After the loss, she was asked whether some of that created pressure for her.
I don't know. Of course, I know that people support me, but is quite expected because I'm in semifinal. I think it's quite normal because is the semifinal. Quite expected.
Had to deal with the situation maybe a bit better. But I wouldn't say I was too nervous. It was just, yeah, I should have find a better way to deal with Marketa's game style. She's very tricky opponent. She gets lots of balls back.
She's had the backing of the crowd in the match and more generally throughout the event. It's not a huge surprise due to the pro-Ukraine position of most of the UK and she expressed her gratitude after her semi-final match.
Yeah, feels unbelievable. To be fair, they supported me all the way through. Even today when I was down, I got a lot of support. I'm really thankful for the crowd to support me, be there for me, and all Ukrainian people as well.
They support us quite a lot in different kind of ways, for a lot of Ukrainians who arrived here when the war started. Really thankful for all the people to support us in different levels.
