Elina Svitolina made a winning start to her Roland Garros campaign and once again she's playing for Ukraine.
Svitolina has been at the forefront of several charitable activities benefitting the people of Ukriane. She's been very active since the War started furtherting the cause of her coutnry and raising awareness of what was going one.
She did that last week in Strasbourg as well opting to donate all the prize money she earned that week to the children of Ukraine. It was a brilliant week in Strasbourg for her as she was able to play some amazing tennis getting into the final and then winning it.
It allowed her a massive move on the rankings as she's working her way back into the top 100 where she belongs. The good win at Roland Garros only contributes to that. She hopes to keep it going because once again, all of her prize money is going back to Ukraine.
After Strasbourg, yes, I'm donating this money to the kids of Ukraine. We will see what exact way it's gonna go. Like, for example, we had a fund-raising event in States that was joined together with Lesia Tsurenko.
We donated that money to the school that was in Kharkiv that was damaged completely, for the school for the kids who has disabilities, so to restore that school. And this prize money I will see what are the possibilities and what are the needs of the cities. Like, for example,in Odessa, my hometown, or in Kharkiv, or maybe in Kyiv, so we will see what are the needs, like urgent needs, and then I'll donate this money there.
She also talked about what has been going on the WTA Tour admitting that there are a lot of empty words and not enough has been done to really help. She shared ways for people to help if they want to with her sole focus right now to help as much as she can as well.
We are focusing on so many, you know, things like empty words, empty things that are not helping the situation, not helping anything. So right now my focus, and I want to invite everyone to focus on helping Ukrainians. That's the main point of this, you know, to help kids, to help women who lost their husbands because they are at the war and they are fighting for Ukraine. We are missing the main point that people now at this time, they need help as never before. The kids, you know, they're losing their parents, they're losing parts of their body.
