Svitolina Or Vondrousova Set To Match 60 Years Untouched Milestone At Wimbledon

The semi-final match between Elina Svitolina and Marketa Vondrousova at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships has a chance to match a 60-year-old untouched milestone.

Elina Svitolina produced a really strong performance to secure another Wimbledon semi-final appearance, four years after her first one in 2019. The Ukranian has been on a mission playing spectacular tennis and more importantly, fighting to the end beating Victoria Azarenka and also Iga Swiatek in a similar manner.

She'll now take on Marketa Vondrousova who played in a Grand Slam final before but it was Roland Garros a few years ago. The Czech player stunned Jessica Pegula with an incredible comeback though, she's apparently dealing with an ankle injury that forced her to abandon plans to continue playing doubles.

Either way, the semi-final is a very special one because the winner of the event will match a 60-year-old milestone at the Wimbledon Championships. A long time ago, in 1963 we saw Margaret Smith play Billie Jean Moffit. The latter was an unseeded finalist in that one losing to her Australian opponent, and this year will mark the first Wimbledon women's final to also feature an unseeded player.

Obviously, Billie Jean Moffit became Billie Jean King later on, while Margaret Smith became Margaret Court. Both are legends of the sport, obviously, and while Svitolina and Vondrousova aren't yet, one of them will equal the milestone.

Neither of them is seeded at the event so whoever wins will match the milestone of Billie Jean King who was the last unseeded finalist at Wimbledon 60 years ago in 1963. The match between them is scheduled to be played on the Centre Court as the first match of the Thursday's schedule.

Fans will want to see if Svitolina can continue her dream run or whether Vondrousova can overcome the ankle injury that has been bothering her.
